Have you ever come across English verbs with out in the formula out + base verb ?

This article will help you understand and use them naturally.

It's not the kind of thing that's commonly taught in learning classes, yet these verbs are very important to understand and use, because they'll make your life easier in many situations. We use them to avoid long sentences.

Let me explain!

How do you translate : he works harder than his brother ?

Your first instinct is probably to say: he works more than his brother.

There's nothing wrong with that, it's understood, but a native English speaker won't say it that way. He'll be quicker and say: he outworks his brother.

You see, when I make the combination out + a verbsimply means that it takes on the meaning of do the thing (verb) more than or better than - it depends on the verb used.

For example, if I want to say: he does better than his brother at school.

I won't be using workwhich would be more like a literal translation. Here, the idea is to say that his school performance is better than that of his brother. So we'll use the verb perform and then make our combination with out to get the sense of more than.

This gives : he outperforms his brother in school.
