We use them to avoid long sentences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let me explain!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How do you translate : <em>he works harder than his brother<\/em> ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your first instinct is probably to say: <em>he works more than his brother<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There's nothing wrong with that, it's understood, but a native English speaker won't say it that way. He'll be quicker and say: <em>he outworks his brother<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You see, when I make the combination <em>out + a verb<\/em>simply means that it takes on the meaning of <em>do the thing (verb) more than or better than<\/em> - it depends on the verb used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if I want to say: <em>he does better than his brother at school<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I won't be using <em>work<\/em>which would be more like a literal translation. Here, the idea is to say that his school performance is better than that of his brother. So we'll use the verb <em>perform<\/em> and then make our combination with <em>out<\/em> to get the sense of <em>more than<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This gives : <em>he outperforms his brother in school<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are a few examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Outrun<\/strong> running faster than<br><em>Ex : She outran everyone in the race.<\/em><br><em>(She outdistanced everyone in the race).<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Outgrow<\/strong> becoming too big to \/ surpassing maturity<br><em>Ex : He outgrew his shoes in two months.<\/em><br><em>(He's outgrown his shoes in two months).<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Outdo<\/strong> surpass, do better than<br><em>Ex : She always tries to outdo her colleagues.<\/em><br><em>(She always tries to outdo her colleagues).<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Outshine<\/strong> to eclipse, to shine brighter than<br><em>Ex : The student outshone the teacher during the debate.<\/em><br><em>(The student eclipsed the teacher during the debate).<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Outnumber<\/strong> : to be outnumbered<br><em>Ex: The enemies outnumbered the soldiers.<\/em><br><em>(The enemies outnumbered the soldiers).<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Outsmart<\/strong> be smarter than<br><em>Ex : He outsmarted the scammer.<\/em><br><em>(He outsmarted the con man).<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Outlive<\/strong> surviving<br><em>Ex : She outlived all her siblings.<\/em><br><em>(She outlived all her brothers and sisters).<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Outlast<\/strong> : last longer than<br><em>Ex: This battery outlasts all the others.<\/em><br><em>(This battery lasts longer than any other).<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Outvote<\/strong> : get more votes than<br><em>Ex : The new law was outvoted.<\/em><br><em>(The new law was rejected by a majority vote).<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Outweigh<\/strong> weigh more than \/ prevail over<br><em>Ex: The benefits outweigh the risks.<\/em><br><em>(The benefits outweigh the risks).<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Outclass<\/strong> surpass in class \/ quality<br><em>Ex : Their team outclassed the others.<\/em><br><em>(Their team outperformed the
